There have been a few issues brought up concerning the security of confidential information and the network laser printers. This information can range from student records to test masters to private email. This will show you how to use these printers in a safe and secure manner.

The problem with the network printers is that whatever you print will remain on in the output tray for all to see until you go and pick it up. One solution to this is to make so your information is not printed until you are at the printer waiting for it to print your work. The easiest way to do this is to print to the Manual Paper Feed.

The procedure for printing to the manual tray should be similar for most programs. Start by going to File -> Print...

Something to the following window should appear. Select the printer that you want to use from the drop-down box at the top.

When you have selected your printer, click the Properties button.

There are many printing options here. Feel free to explore the various menus - there really isn't anything that you can break here. To select your paper source, click the Paper/Quality tab at the top of the window.

Here you can select Manual Feed (Tray 1) from the Paper Options, Source is: drop-down menu.

Click OK to confirm your selection, bringing you back to the Print window. Select whatever options you wish (Number of copies, Page range, etc) and click OK to print your document.

Since you selected to use the Manual Paper Feed tray, your document will be sent to the print server (\\rcsdprint) which will send your document to the printer of your choice. The printer will then try to print the document using paper in the Manual Paper Feed tray. Since this tray is empty, nothing will print until it is loaded with paper. You can then walk up to the printer and insert paper into the Manual Paper Feed as shown below:

When the tray has paper in it, printing should begin automatically, but now you are standing there, ready to retrieve it. This process does require more effort than sendnig a non-confidential document to the printer, but this will ensure that random passers=by cannot see what you are printing.
