Mr. Keith Bartels Hello Everyone!  This is my second year as Richmond Middle School’s Principal.  Prior to becoming principal, I was the assistant principal/athletic director here at Richmond for the previous eight years.  Before going into administration, I was a teacher (Biology, Mathematics, Computers) and coach (Football, Basketball, Baseball, and Wrestling) for five years.

I attended Michigan State University for two and a half years then transferred and graduated from Central Michigan University.  I received my Master’s degree in educational leadership from Saginaw Valley University.

We believe that education is a shared responsibility and by establishing a two-way street line of communication, children will do better in school.  Of course, being a parent is the most important role anyone can have. You are your child’s first and most crucial teacher.  Therefore, if education is a priority to you, it will also be a priority for your child.

Last year, Richmond Middle School made “AYP – Adequate Yearly Progress” in all categories.  We also had growth in many academic areas.

The 2009-2010 school year brings a few changes to our staffing.  New teachers this year to our building include the following: Mrs. Lashbrook, will join our Special Education department; Mrs. Philion, will be a Fifth Grade teacher; Mrs. Chiakmakis, will be a Sixth Grade teacher; Mr. Robert Hamblin, will be teaching Health and Physical Education; and Mr. West, will be teaching Eighth Grade Language Arts.

I feel it is important for me to be a visible presence in the school building and to be an advocate for students, staff, and parents.  I do believe in a disciplined learning environment. I feel that I am firm, but fair and caring.  Children work best when expectations for learning and behavior are clear and consistent.

We are looking forward to the 2009/2010 school year which will bring new experiences and new opportunities as a learning community.  It is great to have your child attend RMS, and we are proud to serve you and your family as your child enters middle school.

I operate with an open door policy and I encourage you to stop in, give me a call at 586-727-7552 or send me an e-mail at kbartels@richmond.k12.mi.us.  I anticipate an incredible 2009-10 school year and look forward to seeing you soon!

Yours in education,
Keith Bartels
